If you are unsure what to write, maybe this example message will help:
“Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m interested in counselling. I’ve been struggling with [brief issue, e.g., stress, overthinking, decision-making], and I’d like to explore how counselling might help. I was wondering/would like to ask [insert your question]. / I’m available for sessions on [your availability] and I prefer in person/online sessions. Do you have any available slots?”
Counsellors are bound to a specific scope of practice which is comprehensive but excludes psychotherapy, social work, medical health work and occupational therapy. Counsellors are obliged to terminate counselling and refer clients to a professional (doctor, psychologist, social worker or psychiatrist) where their counselling, with reference to possible pathology or dysfunction, falls outside the scope of their practice.
