Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
Counselling is for anyone who feels stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about their next steps. If you find yourself struggling with stress and anxiety, decision-making, relationships, emotional regulation, or ADHD-related challenges, counselling can help.
Many of my clients come to their first session with this exact question in mind. It’s completely normal to feel unsure about whether counselling is the right step, and part of my role is to help you explore what support would be most helpful for you.
What is the difference between wellness counselling and psychotherapy?
As a Specialist Wellness Counsellor I work within a defined scope of practice, which is comprehensive but different from psychotherapy.
Psychotherapy (therapy) and psychological counselling is provided by HPCSA-registered psychologists and counsellors and focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological and mental-health disorders.
Where a client requires a formal diagnosis, medical or psychiatric intervention, or specialised treatment for a psychological disorder or suicidality, I refer them to an appropriate healthcare professional, such as a medical doctor, psychologist, or psychiatrist.
Wellness counselling focuses on supporting individuals in navigating difficulties in their day-to-day lives and in promoting and maintaining psychological wellness and functioning. Wellness counselling does not involve diagnosing or treating psychological disorders. Instead, it supports clients in navigating challenges such as stress, anxiety or low mood at a non-diagnostic level, emotional regulation, decision-making, relationship dynamics, personal development, and ADHD-related challenges in daily functioning.
Counselling is a collaborative process in which the client and counsellor work together to increase psychological awareness, resilience, and well-being.

What areas do you specialize in and what approaches do you use?
I work with individuals facing a variety of challenges, including:
- Life transitions, grief, and self-discovery.
- Worrying, stress, and emotional regulation.
- Overthinking, self-doubt, and decision-making difficulties.
- ADHD-related struggles (focus, procrastination, impulsivity).
- Burnout, perfectionism, and work-life balance.
- Relationship and communication challenges.
I take an integrative approach, drawing from:
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) – Helps explore and relate to different aspects of the self.
- Systemic Counselling – Examines relational patterns and interpersonal dynamics.
- Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) – Focuses on building psychological flexibility.
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills (DBT-Skills) – Helps with emotional regulation and distress tolerance.
What are the session logistics & what are your fees?
- Each session lasts 50 minutes.
- I offer both in-person counselling at my practice in Hilton (KZN) and online sessions via Zoom for national and international clients.
- My session rate is R750, but I also offer a flexible pricing option, with sessions available from R650 for clients needing financial accommodation. Additionally, I offer a 5 session package at R700 per session (R3500 per package).
- I do not work with medical aids, as wellness counselling is not covered by most medical aid plans.
Can I speak with you before booking a full session?
Yes! I offer a free 10-15 minute phone consultation for new clients. It’s a no-pressure way to discuss your needs, ask questions, and see if we’re the right fit. If you’d like to schedule a free call, you can do so on my Contact Page.
Do you work with children and teenagers?
I primarily work with adults but occasionally work with children and teenagers, depending on their needs. If you’re seeking support for a child or teen, please reach out, and we can discuss whether my approach would be a good fit for them.
Do you work with couples/families?
Yes, as a counsellor trained in systemic counselling, I work with couples and families on creating and improving interpersonal dynamics that serve them and their relationship.
If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out. Counselling is a collaborative process, and I want to ensure it feels right for you.
My son has been struggling with ADHD from a young age. I didn’t realise the effect it had on his overall mental health and confidence until a few years later. Svenja helped him through counselling, working on issues such as anxiety and managing his emotions. As a mom I am so grateful for that intervention which ultimately helped changed the trajectory of my son’s primary school years.
Jo, Hilton
Svenja is an exceptional individual who has profoundly influenced my journey towards better mental well-being. Her expertise in various therapeutic modalities and use of evidence-based practices further enhanced the effectiveness of the counselling, and her unwavering commitment to my well-being and always ensuring that I felt comfortable and supported throughout the process is what sets her apart.

Counsellors are bound to a specific scope of practice which is comprehensive but excludes psychotherapy, social work, medical health work and occupational therapy. Counsellors are obliged to terminate counselling and refer clients to a professional (doctor, psychologist, social worker or psychiatrist) where their counselling, with reference to possible pathology or dysfunction, falls outside the scope of their practice.
